Alphose Mucha, the Art Nouveau master, has been a huge inspiration in my own artwork this year. At the suggestion of my design professor, I looked up his work and didn't look back. His artwork features stained glass colors, elaborate curving lines, and ethereal women (according to Art.com, where you can buy prints of his work). But to me, the artwork represents a lot more than just a pretty picture. The women pictured in Mucha's work are ethereal, bohemian, and carefree. That indicates to me so much happiness and confidence. While I realize I can't realistically embody one of his subjects every day, letting my hair flow wildly and not being so caught up in the perfection of every outfit is something I'd like to take with me forever.
While the images are beautiful, what I feel towards the women pictured is even better. This is why it was very important to me to interpret a painting by Mucha for this art inspired ensemble sponsored by Lulus.com. I took some key elements from the painting pictured above (one of my favorites) such as the maxi dress, the metal elements on the top of the dress, and the headband and directly used those as inspiration. The rest of my inspiration came from imagining what it would feel like to be the woman that Mucha painted. Therefore, the pictures you see today are all about getting into character: a confident, playful young woman.
I definitely hope to take how great it felt to pose for these pictures and apply that to every outfit I wear. I'm so grateful that I've had the opportunity to work with Lulus on a project that has surely changed the way I look at fashion for the better. Now, tell me, what inspires you?
