Having a friend who lives ten minutes away from the Blue Ridge Parkway certainly has its perks. On my last trip to Boone to visit Alysse, the timing happened to be perfect for a jaunt up the parkway. Although everyone has pretty much moved on into full holiday spirits, my heart belongs to fall. When sights like this in the month of October are so close to me, I'm sure you can see why.
What started as just a drive up the parkway turned into a quick hike to see the spectacular Linville Falls. We did this hike in ballet flats and ankle boots, so it is definitely beginner friendly with the most popular overlook only being a 1.6 mile round trip. There are four different overlooks to appreciate.
Going on hikes in more pedestrian looking clothing always gives me a bit of pause- "do people think that I'm a complete novice?" ,"How stupid and unprepared do I look right now?", etc. But the fact that trails like this have essentially been my backyard makes me more than willing to hop out of the car and take on the woods in semi-inappropriate footwear and a blazer.
If I can manage the trek up the mountains in my tiny Honda Civic, I am anxiously awaiting seeing the stark beauty of the Blue Ridge during winter. While sunny, temperate days are beautiful of their own merit, there is something about tackling hikes and taking photographs in more brutal winter conditions that appeals to the pioneering spirit in me.
