Although I don't officially follow the capsule wardrobe model after the pitfalls of last year, I find something very therapeutic about compiling my favorite and most used items into a master collage. At the very least, I plan on using the Photoshop document to create outfit combinations digitally. I don't intend on putting away every single item that falls outside this list (especially considering that I wear a white button down so often that if I only had one it would constantly be in the wash), but this helped me narrow down my sartorial inspiration.
I tend to waver between a streetwear aesthetic and classic, "preppy" staples from heritage brands. No matter the style, I do my research and find most of my big ticket items secondhand. I could never afford this wardrobe if I bought everything new. Most of the items are either things I found years ago, bought on deep discount, or purchased secondhand.
There's a mix of very high quality investment pieces and things I found at Goodwill; but you will also see a few fast fashion items. I try to keep the ratio at about 80%/20% in favor of the high-quality/ethical or secondhand goods, but I don't prefer to spend a lot on seasonal trends. This is where fast fashion shines. I buy cheap, trendy things the way I use siracha: sparingly, but appreciatively.
The things I considered most were:
- Incorporating items I wear the most along with a few recently purchased things
- The mild, rainy winters in East Tennessee
- My color palette of mostly black and denim, with a penchant for camel and red accents
- My active lifestyle and long distance relationship that involves being away from home 2-3 days in the middle of the week
- A casual, typically working from home job with occasional needs for a more dressed up day
My considerations are unique to my situation; however, that doesn't mean that a capsule wardrobe isn't a viable option for someone with a stricter budget or dress code. This collection happens to meet my needs. I enjoy the styling aspect of creating a wardrobe so much that you can expect other options soon!
Here's the breakdown of my pieces. Please refer to the key to clarify the symbols. Also, I have tried to link to options that were similar in cost if they are not exact. I used affiliate links throughout (more details on how that works here), but feel free to delete your cookies if you want.
