When I think of my ideal wardrobe, it matches my ideal lifestyle. It allows for a beautiful closet that i can flip through with ease. If I needed to, I could fit all the items in a carry on bag and jet off to who knows where on a moment's notice. It is suited to my favorite kind of weather: mild but sunny with a cool breeze. I could walk for miles in a city, go out dancing, or take a stroll through the countryside. It is a wardrobe that works with all of my favorite things about myself.
After countless hours on Pinterest and sorting through my own clothes, I realize now that variety is not something I necessarily value when it comes to my own wardrobe. I roll my eyes just as much as anyone else at the romanticizing of the ideal 5-piece French wardrobe. The words capsule wardrobe make me feel physical pain. There's only so much minimalist fashion I can take. But whittling down my wardrobe to my 17 most essential items of clothing is therapeutic. I play with Polyvore or Photoshop to create a million outfits in order to remind myself that I have all of the essential clothing items for my casual and on-the-go lifestyle.
I will always admire the magpie aesthetic of street style stars and fashion bloggers. But my Pinterest board dedicated to my style icons is full of people who repeat wonderful looks with no qualms. They know what works. And it often involves many of my favorite pieces anyways. It made me think that I really could get away with wearing only these 17 essential wardrobe staples, if only for a time. If you're feeling inspired to clean out your closet and adopt a more classic aesthetic, then I hope this list can provide you a starting point.
Realistically, I would add a black tee shirt and black silk button up into the mix so I could do more all black outfits. For the sake of more extreme minimalism, I just stuck with white. The great thing about this wardrobe is that it is totally customizable to your preferred colors. I almost always wear black, white, blue, and olive green with occasional red accents, as you will see in the items below:
